Vocabulary Post – 10 words


1.      Preposterous pg. 9

Sentence – “I don’t know how to respond. The idea is so preposterous.”

Definition- completely contrary to nature, reason, or common sense; absurd; senseless; utterly foolish: a preposterous tale.

New sentence- Putting figs and strawberries together in a drink is a preposterous idea.



2.     Sustenance pg. 18

Sentence- He lists the disasters, the droughts, the storms, the fires, the encroaching seas that swallowed up so much of the land, the brutal war for what little sustenance remained.

Definition- means of life, nourishment and livelihood

New sentence- The garden had very little sustenance after the storm hit.



3.     Summons pg. 37

Sentence- Then I can’t think of anything else, so we sit in silence until a Peacemaker summons him.

Definition- A request, demand or a call to do something.

New Sentence- The principal summons all students to the office when they have done something wrong.

4.     Insurmountable pg. 36

Sentence-Besides, it isn’t in my nature to go down without a fight, even when things seem insurmountable.

Definition- to get over or across, passed over or overcome

New sentence- My fear of spiders and going on rides that are really high is insurmountable.



5.     Oblivion p. 54

Sentence- The only thing I feel is a desire to be somewhere else. So I let the train rock me to oblivion.

Definition- the state of being mentally withdrawn or blank, forgetfulness or in limbo.

New Sentence- When I watched a scary movie I was in a state of oblivion after the loud noise.


6.     Flamboyant pg. 64

Sentence- I had expected someone flamboyant, someone older trying desperately to look young, someone who viewed me as a piece of meat to be prepared for a platter.

Definition- strikingly bold or brilliant; showy, easily seen or noticed; readily visible or observable

New Sentence-My new dance costume was flamboyant with all of its sparkles and bright colours.



7.     Intertwines pg. 86

Sentence-  My slumbers are filled with disturbing dreams. The face of the redheaded girl intertwines with gory images from earlier Hunger Games, with my mother withdrawn and unreachable, with Prim emaciated and terrified.

Definition- to twine together, to unite or be united by twisting or twining together.

New Sentence- When I have two tests on the same day my thoughts get intertwined and it is hard to focus on one test.

8.    Serrated pg. 151

Sentence-I also free the knife-it’s a fine one with a long sharp blade, serrated near the handle, which will make it handy for sawing through things- and slide it into my belt.

Definition- having a notched edge or saw-like teeth, especially for cutting;

New Sentence- I used a serrated knife to cut through my steak.

9.     Anticipation pg. 244

Sentence- I cover my good ear to block out the strains of the anthem, but then I hear the trumpets and I sit up straight in anticipation.

Definition- the act of anticipating; expectation, premonition, or foresight, to expect; look forward to; be sure of

New Sentence- I waited quietly in anticipation for my birthday party.
                             
10.Prominent pg. 348


Sentence- Not only has it been scrubbed clean, the nails are filed in perfect ovals, the scars from the burns are less prominent.

Definition: standing out so as to be seen easily; conspicuous; particularly noticeable

New sentence-The bright clothes and music in Justice make it a prominent store in the mall.
